Yes. The majority of Islamic scholars in the Hanafi, Shafi'i, and Hanbali schools permit Umrah Badal for deceased individuals and for living individuals with a permanent inability to travel. The basis is authentic hadith in which the Prophet ﷺ told a woman to perform Hajj on behalf of her elderly father who could not travel. Scholars apply the same ruling to Umrah. Yes. Sa'd ibn Ubadah asked the Prophet ﷺ after his mother died whether sadaqah given on her behalf would benefit her. The Prophet ﷺ said yes. Scholars describe this through isaal al-thawab, the gifting of reward. You perform the act, the reward belongs to you, and you gift it through your intention to the named person. Allah conveys it to them. Critically, you do not lose your own reward by gifting it. Both you and the person you named receive reward.

Yes. This is the most common reason people arrange Umrah Badal. A parent who passed away before they could perform Umrah, or a parent who always intended to go but never got the chance. The intention is made clearly in their name before Tawaf and the full reward reaches them.

Yes, if the illness or physical condition permanently prevents them from travelling to Makkah and performing Umrah themselves. This applies to elderly parents in their 80s or 90s who cannot physically make the journey, and to those with permanent illness or disability. If the incapacity is temporary and recovery is possible, scholars generally say to wait until they can perform it themselves.

The person performing Umrah Badal must be Muslim, physically capable of performing Umrah, and, according to the majority of scholars, should have already completed their own Umrah first. Umrah Badal is proxy Umrah. Umrah is voluntary, so Umrah Badal is a gift of reward, not an obligation. It can be performed any day of the year and costs $295.00. Hajj Badal is proxy Hajj. Hajj is the Fifth Pillar of Islam and obligatory for capable Muslims. Hajj Badal may be a religious debt if the person was capable but died without performing it. Hajj Badal must be performed only during the days of Dhul Hijjah and is far more expensive.

Proxy Umrah and Badal Umrah are different names for the same thing: Umrah Badal. A proxy means one person acting on behalf of another. When someone performs Proxy Umrah, they stand in Masjid al-Haram, enter Ihram, name the intended recipient in their intention, and complete the full Umrah, with the reward going to that person.

Yes. A woman from the tribe of Khath'am came to the Prophet ﷺ during the Farewell Hajj and said her father was too elderly to travel. The Prophet ﷺ told her to perform Hajj on his behalf. This is reported in Bukhari and Muslim. The ruling is applied to Umrah by scholarly consensus across the Hanafi, Shafi'i, and Hanbali schools. There are additional narrations confirming that acts of worship dedicated to the deceased benefit them.
